Deaths on Irish roads below global average - but top alcohol consumption

Health at a glance 2009

Irish people are now among the biggest consumers of alcohol by state, surpassed only by Luxembourg, in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The survey Health at a glance 2009 covered a broad spread of 30 OECD countries including Ireland, the UK, Spain, the US, mexico and Japan.

The average for road deaths across the OECD reports at 9.6 deaths per 100,000 of the population. Ireland was well below the average at 6.7 deaths. The highest rates were found in Mexico with 18 deaths per 100,000.

In 2007 13.4 litres of pure alcohol were sold annually to people aged 15 or over - luxembourg having 15.5 litres. The lowest consumption was in Turkey at 1.2 litres. Alcohol consumption rose by as much as 40% in Ireland, Mexico and Iceland.

The US still hails as the most obese nation, but Ireland also falls in the category of having over 50% of adults over weight.

The OECD average life expectancy over all countries was 79.1 whereas Ireland was estimated at 79.7 years.

Shit be upside down

You probably know that the light passing to the back of our eye is inverted after going through the lens. The brain then flips the image giving you upright vision. How nice.
But if you were to wear glasses with a lens that invert everything you see, your brain will figure out that you are not upside down and flip the image again. You can then take off the glasses and everything returns to being upside down. Once again the brain figures it out and flips your vision back to normal.
